Donington Park race circuit, part of the Donington Park Estate is owned by the Wheatcroft family and is located nearby to the village of Castle Donington in Leicestershire in the United Kingdom. Until 2038, the Donington Park motorsport race circuit is under lease to MotorSport Vision, a motorsports organisation owned by Jonathon Palmer. Donington Park’s history goes back to between the first and second world wars when it was built as a race circuit and during World War II is was used to store military vehicles when it fell into disrepair. It was bought by Tom Wheatcroft and became part of the Donington Hall Estate.
Tom rebuilt the race circuit during the 1970s when it even hosted a single Formula One race and it quickly became host to the annual British round of the MotoGP. Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd leased the race circuit in 2007 with the plan to return Formula One to Donington but the 2008 financial crisis put paid to that and Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd couldn’t keep up with required circuit maintenance. Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd lost rights to both Formula One and MotoGP, went into bankruptcy and the circuit was returned to the Wheatcroft family in late 2009.
Under the families ownership, the race track had significant restoration work completed and was restored to use in 2010 with very significant upgrades until 2015 and across this period the track became host to the Donington Historic Festival, an annual motorsport event. And the track became host to the top class World Superbike Championship with world-class motorcycling. In August 2017 Jonathon Palmer’s MotoSport Vision had approved and secured a long term lease on the track until 2038 and since the circuit has seen many significant improvements – restaurant, new toilet blocks, large grandstand and new offices. From 2019 has seen extra events for the British Superbike Championship and British GT at Donington Park race circuit.
